Cell Phone Policy
Merlo Station Campus Cell Phone Policy
In alignment with Governor Tina Kotek’s executive order and district policy, Beaverton High School is adopting a bell-to-bell cell phone and personal device ban beginning this school year. This applies to cell phones, earbuds, headphones, and smartwatches.
All devices must remain off and stored in a backpack or locker throughout the school day, including passing periods, restroom breaks, and lunch. Students with IEPs or 504 plans that include device-related accommodations are exempt.
We know this is a big shift, and we want families and students to be clear on what this looks like in practice. Below, we have provided some answers to some frequently asked questions that have been shared with us. This policy is new, and must be adopted by October 31st, so these answers are subject to change as we receive more information.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What if my student needs to use their phone during an emergency?
A: We have an established emergency communication protocol that we will continue to follow unless district or state guidance changes. If there is a schoolwide emergency, staff will provide direction. If your student needs to contact you during a personal emergency, they should request a pass to the main office where they can use a phone. Parents and guardians can contact the main office if there is an emergency.
Q: Can students use their phones for translation or academic purposes?
A: No. Students will have access to Chromebooks and district-approved translation and accessibility tools for learning purposes. Phones will not be used for classroom translation or research.
Q: Will students receive reminders about personal devices?
A: We are encouraging our staff to give verbal reminders to pack devices as part of their daily classroom routines at the start of the year. We are encouraging students to print or write down their class schedules before the first day of school but understand that some may need to check their new schedules during the first two days during passing times. After the first two days, phones will be confiscated and brought to the office if they are not “packed” or “parked”.
Q: Can students use their phones for academic purposes such as CTE classes?
A: No. Students will have other district approved devices to use for specific academic purposes and may not use their personal devices.
Q: Are wireless headphones, earbuds, or smartwatches allowed?
A: Smartwatches may not be used at any time during the school day. Wireless headphones or earbuds may only be used when connected to a district-approved device (such as a Chromebook) for a specific academic purpose as directed by the teacher. They may not be connected to personal devices such as cell phones.
Q: Where should students store their devices during the day?
A: Devices must be packed away in a backpack. They may not be carried in pockets or worn on the body.
Q: What if a student has a real, non-emergency need to use their phone?
A: Students can ask a teacher for a pass to the main office to make a call or handle an approved situation. If it is non-emergency, it will be teacher discretion for a hall pass.
Q: What should I do if I need to contact my child urgently during the school day?
A: Please call the main office at Merlo (503-356-3650). We will ensure your child receives the message promptly.
Q: Are students allowed to bring their own computer or iPad?
A: As of now, the BSD Board policy allows students to use non-district computers and iPads.
