Student Council

At today's meeting we had DeAnthony and Dana come speak to the council about their recent survey. We reviewed the upcoming garden work parties. 

We were able to meet with Jon and present some of our end of the year school year ideas as well as next school year too. We are excited to help with game night on Friday, May 16th. We will be sending some student council representatives to work with the Leadership class and help to plan a field day for May 30th. We will continue to look into different fundraising ideas to support the school and the fun activities we want to do.

We met at the District  Service Center for the first ever Student Council Retreat. We had a special guest, Jenna Thoma from the District office lead an activity/lesson on communication and being a good listener. We enjoyed a delicious pizza and extras lunch. Then we got down to business; developing our committees, discussing our council guidelines, planning some events for the end of this school year as well as planning numerous events for next year (3 dances and a prom).

Today, our student council met and was able to run the meeting entirely themselves. They created the agenda and the presidents (Erica and Issac) were able to keep everyone on track, it has been impressive to see the growth in this group already. They discussed the different committees and what members need to do to make progress on some of their ideas such as working on the garden outside, fundraising, having the gym open in the mornings, and promoting the Latin dance night on May 2nd. They discussed one of their goals of working to make Merlo more inclusive and to have more activities that represent more of our community. We are looking forward to our afternoon retreat to the district office to create more guidelines for the group and expand on the committees on April 30th. 

Today we reviewed the committee assignments that members volunteered for last week. Hannah and Erin will meet with the committees separately prior to next week to get them up and running. 

Each member suggested two goals for the council to focus on for the remainder of the school year and we narrowed them down to four goals. Members were assigned to each goal and will follow up with appropriate adults to get more information before our next meeting.

We also had members volunteer for writing council guidelines, election guidelines, and job descriptions. We are also going to be called "Student Council" moving forward.

This group is MOTIVATED! 

After two separate votes resulting in a tie, we are happy to announce that we will have two co-presidents! Congratulations to Erica (senior) and Isaac (sophomore)! They will start leading the meetings moving forward. We discussed some ideas on what we can be doing, more roles, and having some committees. 

We had our third meeting today! Today candidates for the President and Vice President made statements about why they would be a good fit for the role they were running for. After that we collected ballots and are hoping to the have the results announced tomorrow and Friday.

We discussed term limits and additional roles that we may want i.e. secretary and treasurer. 

We talked about the new paper version of the student suggestion/recommendation forms that are now posted outside of the art gallery (the form is also on the website.)

Our second meeting! We have added senior, Erica and freshman, Dillon to the committee. We discussed group organization and have decided to have a President and a Vice President. We talked about what those elected positions would do. At the next meeting those who are interested will share why they would be good in that role. Then we will vote by ballot.

We had our first Student Advisory Committee today. We introduced ourselves, talked about the new group and what we might be able to accomplish. We would like to add a Freshman and a Senior to make the Committee more balanced. Erin and Hannah will work on this and hopefully have the new members by the next meeting.
